When I embarked on the renovation of my own home I wanted to really celebrate the character of my 1940s house. It had lost most of its original details, all that remained was the fireplace mantle with its soft curves and fluted pattern. It was this and the 1960s pink and grey bathroom that served as the inspiration for the new scheme. The house was gutted back to it bones (except for the mantelpiece) and was rebuilt in a way to make it feel like it could have always been there, with the details of the 1940s reborn. The new kitchen, although thoroughly contemporary, included details like fluting on the door panels and curves to the island benchtop. A new curved coffered ceiling creates a dramatic and unexpected drama to the now combined dining and kitchen. A new bathroom pays homage to the 60s one with a two tone effect of pink and grey walls with a checkerboard grey terrazzo floor. The same theme was used in the laundry. Narrow blackbutt flooring was added throughout and the new sliding doors open onto a generous new terrace in crazy paving of sandstone and Carrera marble.
